* Accepting NHS Right to Choose Referrals for Childhood ADHD from 1st November! *

NHS Right to Choose Assessments

Harley Street Mental Health is commissioned by the NHS to provide specialist neurodevelopmental assessments in England.

At present, we provide:
  • Right to Choose Adult Autism Assessments (18 years and older)
  • Right to Choose Adult ADHD Assessments (18 years and older)

From 1st November we will also be accepting Childhood ADHD referrals (ages 6-17) and Titration Only referrals for people previously diagnosed with ADHD.

These assessments are NHS-funded, so there is no cost to you, but you must be referred by your GP.

*Please note that if you are a patient from Greater Manchester ICB, Thames Valley ICB, Hampshire & Isle of Wight ICB, North East and North Cumbria, Kent and Medway or West and North London ICB, your waiting time will be higher due to the introduction of Indicative Activity Plans reducing the funding available for new assessments in these areas. We have been advised wait times may exceed one year.

Suitability, Consent, & Safe Waiting
  • To ensure our service is the best one for your patient, confirm with the patient that there are no acute or unmanaged risks that make waiting for an assessment unsuitable for the patient
  • Exclusion criteria for referrals are detailed in each referral form in accordance with our NHS contracts
  • Ensure all relevant parties consent to the assessment
  • Ensure a virtual assessment is conducive to success for the patient
What Makes a Referral Complete

To process a patient's referral to our service, we require:

  • A Summary of Care
  • A referral form or letter
  • A risk assessment
  • Legible and accurate contact and identifying information for the patient and GP practice

Without these, there will be delays in processing the referral.

For child referrals school reports, SENCO needs assessments, and adjustments the school has previously tried are also requested.

Urgent Referrals

This is NOT a crisis service. Should you deem a patient requires an earlier assessment that current wait times permit, please outline why, the likely effect of delay, relevant evidence, and time scale in the referral. Urgent referrals are not guaranteed to occur on an accelerated timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQs)

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, our team is here to help. Contact us for personalized guidance.

Can I send a referral myself?

We cannot accept self referrals. All Right to Choose Referrals must be submitted by your registered GP practice in England.

Can I have an in-person appointment?

Our Right to Choose service is fully virtual. Only West Yorkshire Autism Patients have the option to have an in-person assessment in Leeds. All other assessments and appointments take place over a video call.

Can a school refer a child directly for an ADHD Assessment?

While the school will provide supporting documentation for the referral, the Right to Choose referral itself must come from the patient's registered GP practice. Please share any education reports and supporting information to the GP to provide alongside the referral.

Do you accept dual referrals (one referral for both Adult ADHD and Adult Autism)?

While we accept dual referrals, the assessments will be separate. Dual referrals are treated as two separate referrals sent on the same day. We do not conduct combined assessments.

What happens after my GP sends my referral?
Once your referral is sent by your GP, it is reviewed by our team, who may correspond with your GP for further information. Once your referral is processed by our team, if it is accepted, you will receive an email with questionnaires to complete ahead of booking an assessment appointment. We aim to process all referrals within 10 business days.
What if I am already on another waiting list or have a diagnosis already?

You can only be on one Right to Choose waiting list at a time. To submit a referral to our service, you would have to take yourself off any other Right to Choose waiting lists ahead of your GP sending the referral.

If you already have a diagnosis, please ensure your GP includes this in the referral documentation.

What if I need help with forms or communication?

Our service does not currently have the capacity to provide interpreters for assessments. All assessments take place in spoken English over a video call. Should you require an alternate form of communication, our service may not be a fit for you.

Should you require the questionnaires in an alternate format, please send us an email at contact@hsmh.co.uk and we can see what can be arranged.

How long will it take from referral to assessment?

We aim to process referrals within 10 business days of receiving them from your GP. One your referral has been processed, your wait time is dependant on where your GP Practice is located. You can use the wait time checker at the top of this page to get an approximate wait time for your area.

Do I have to pay for the assessment?

No, Right to Choose patients' journeys with our service are fully funded by the NHS. This includes the assessment as well as any ADHD treatment/follow up where applicable.

Why are there so many questionnaires and do I have to complete all of them?

The questionnaires you complete ahead of your appointment allow your assessor to get a fuller picture of your, your circumstances, your symptoms, and how ADHD or Autism may have affected your life. Completing all of them is also essential to comply with NICE guidelines so that your diagnosis and report will be accepted by the NHS. Without all questionnaires complete ahead of the appointment, your appointment may be delayed or cancelled.

What if I don't have anyone to fill out the childhood informant questionnaire for me?

If no one who knew you in childhood is able to fill out the questionnaire, you can send us an email at contact@hsmh.co.uk explaining this. We can send you an alternate version of the form to complete, and give further help for your specific circumstance.
